Hello, I am a history student at Leeds uni and I have just started Bonsia, I would love to be able to get as much help as possible. I have also started a blog which should track my journey and hopefully help new beginners to bonsai acquire information and pitfalls when starting out. So hey all! |

Hi staker - welcome to this forum. Its a great place to learn. I had a look at your blog. At the moment I feel you have more enthusiasm than you have material to work with and I sense that you are itching to get down to some snipping and pruning! I also sense that maybe you don't have a huge budget for your new hobby but I would recommend that you go to a garden centre and have a search around for some small leaved shrubs that you could use to practice pruning and styling while you wait for your Wilkinson bargains to grow a bit. The small leaved cotoneasters and Lonicera nitida are usually quite easy to find and not very expensive. They make great starter material and you will gain valuable experience by styling a garden centre shrub into a bonsai shape. Read through as much of this forum as you can. There is lots and lots of good advice here. Good luck and keep asking questions - its the best way to learn |

Hey, My enthusiasm does exceed my current collection, but I do have patience, I am going to wait for them to grow before doing anything to them. I was thinking of buying a large potted juniper but I would rather see something through from (almost) the beginning. In the 20 seconds which took me to type the above, I think I will go buy a cheap shrub to start pruning. My tightness is probably mistaken for lack of money, hehe. |

Welcoome aboard. Have a good look around the garden centres, your bargains will take quite a few years to become much but a garden centre shrub could look more like a bonsai in a lot shorter time space. Have fun though with it whatever you chose. |

Hi and welcome to this friendly and helpful group of enthusiasts You are not far from John Hanby's Bonsai nursary (Newstead Bonsai Centre) http://www.johnhanbybonsai.co.uk/ It would be worth you while visiting. He has plenty of cheap starter material, as well as trees costing mega money. Even if you don't buy anything, John is very approachable and helpful. He does run workshops if you are interested. |
