Hi Phil and welcome to wee trees.

£4 for a little elm is a bargain. Even though they are small it will give you plenty of chance to practice keeping them while you await the slooooooooow process of growing from seed. May I ask which supermarket chain you found them in?

Post some pics of your new trees for all to see and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Hi Phil,

Welcome to forum.

I agree with Don, don't bother with seeds. you will be better off using the bargain trees and practice on them. Main thing is to achieve your goals and keep these tree alive the same time :

But no worries if few of them die... you need to kill few of them to learn how not to kill them.

Hi Phil
Welcome to Wee Trees.
Trees from seed are ok so long as you have a few practice trees on which you can try out your techniques and hone your skills. Don't be tempted to plant the seedlings straight in to bonsai pots. Give them a year or three in the ground to get off to a good start.

Hi Phil and welcome. I agree with the others that seeds are a pretty frustrating way to go. Having said which, look at

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1412

Which is my sycamore grown from seed - but it was planted in 1978 (about) so has taken 30+ years, 25+ of which were the tree just sitting in a flower pot growing, and me just sitting next to it waiting. You want to wait that long? Get trees!

Cheers - hope to hear more from you on this great forum. J.

ive grown a few from seed and i found it very worth while ....especially my baobab seed which was amazing to watch, it sprouted in a couple of days and was unbelievable how such a big shoot came from a seed 7mm round so quickly...i did a post on it....and a seed from one of those grow your own bonsai boxes(with real bonsai seeds :32crazy: :07hysterical: ) turned out to be a eucalyptus ..but it wasnt supposed to be ......it was planted a year ago approx....now it is two foot tall with a surprisingly thick trunk for its age
