hi,

my name is suzanne and i am extremely new to all this! i have always loved bonsai trees but thought they were way too finicky for me to deal with. however, a special friend has convinced me otherwise. so now i have two silver birch sapplings, one bought for 99p from morrisons, and a wild sappling. both are currently outside in a large container just doing their thing till next year. i have also just bought a fukien tea which i adore. at the moment it is sulking due to the change of home (grower, to The Range, to my house) so dropping some leaves, but otherwise healthy.

oh and i have just remembered that i have an oak sappling growing from an original tree in my field. i forget it's there! a future project for my friend i think.

i shall post some pics in the 'show us yours' section.

thanks guys!

Don, the fukien is in my front room, i have a huge bay window so lots of light as it's east facing. i shall be getting some aquarium gravel for the drip tray for the humidity levels. i'm reading more and more about how tempramental these trees are, but i like a challenge lol it was very dry when i got it as the range are not known for their plant care. i spent a couple of days just spaying the top soil untill the water drained through. now i'm monitoring and watering every couple of days. i give water till it comes through the bottom and allow to drain off.

i do think it needs repotting but so far friend and i are not quite sure how it's fixed in the tray. it has the rocks which seem cemented in and the roots are coming through the holes or the tray which suggests it needs work? but i don't want to disturb it right now although i'm sure the soil is probably wrong.

any advice greatfully recieved!

suzanne

there are no rocks, stones covering the soil, as i have seen on others, just the rocks for display (it's now my avatar) the surface is just soil with a little moss trying to grow on it. should i still take off the top surface and replace with gravel or leave it as it is?
