little about me, iv been interested in bonsai for over 10 years, im now 27, over the years i have had 4 bonsai trees, since my work takes me all over england ireland and wales i have a hard time looking after them the way they deserve, i left one with my brother and he didnt look after it and it died, iv jst had a major set back last month, i think both my current trees have died, one was bought from a shop 3 years ago, and the other was a 10 year old that i collected as a seedling and have watched grow all its life, i started a new job and had to work away, i didnt realise that i would be working for a month non stop, unfortunatly it was during the heat wave and my poor trees dropped all there leaves and dried up, they were out of direct sunlight, they were outdoor trees and i didnt have anyone who could water them for me. i was gutted to see them like this when i got home,

anyway i look forward to picking up some valuable info on here as i have only read a few simple books on the subject and have always jst styled them in a way that pleased me and not followed any specific styles, techniques or rules.

thanks graham :Big Thumb:

Hi Graham - welcome to this lovely forum where all your questions will be treated with respect and answered in a friendly and helpful manner by experts (among whom I am not one). You have certainly had a traumatic few weeks with bonsai - but you will have learned some truly invaluable lessons from all this which you can carry forward into your hobby for the next 50 years!

Looking forward to seeing what trees you acquire next. I notice you are in Doncaster - isn't someone else newly joined from there too? You may have the makings of a network. If you do decide to purchase trees, I recommend you do so from a proper dealer, who will give you good value and good advice along with it. Our sponsors' links at the top of the page make a good start, and Greenwoods can't be far from you, surely? I write with the ignorance of a southerner....

Cheers! J.

thanks for the warm welcome... looking on the internet i have found a local nursery in wakefield and when i get some money together i am planning buying some material to work with, its very sad to loose a tree iv had since i was 17, altho it probly wasnt the best example it would be nice to tell people when im old and grey that i had it since i was very young and had grown it nearly from seed, im originaly from northeast of scotland and that was where i collected the tree but am now in doncaster for work reasons.

Graham hi and welcome.

You can check if your trees are dead by scratching the bark and make sure they are green underneath.

As John said - it's really handy to have a local bonsai acquaintances where you can keep trees in holidays etc. I pay a retired gardener to water mine...

have jst checked the trees, and one is still green under the bark, the other is a birch i think, and i cant see any green under the bark but didnt want to dig to deep. will jst wait and see what happens with them, they are both out in the garden, i expect they wont show signs of growth again till next year.

SHEEMPUL!

hello. iv been looking at a watering system called tropf blumat, they have a simple dripper system that is activated when the soil becomes dry, it is a water presure system so no pumps or timers and they have a specialy designed fitting for bonsai plants, have you heard or them? are they any good for bonsai

There's more to go wrong than with a water simple timer.
