Hi All, thought I'd introduce myself. I'm Sam, I'm a Building Surveyor during the day. Outside of work I'm a keen cyclist, a hobby beekeeper, and have a green finger or two in my modest garden in West Sussex. I've always fancied a Bonsai, and might have mentioned it once or twice as my interest was sparked on a recent holiday to Penang... As such, this Christmas I received not one, but two(!) Bonsais! I also received the book Bonsai Basics by Colin Lewis and two small pairs of snips. I have resisted the temptation to do much other than keep them both watered and learn all that I can. The small book has been 100% digested, I've read many topics on this wonderful forum, and been all over the internet absorbing the basics. I now know that I have a pair of Chinese Elm trees, slightly different ages/sizes, each with it's own set of characteristics. I've added a photo of the 'front' aspect of each tree. I have my own thoughts on each of them but would be very grateful for any comments;

I have found a suitable spot for them indoors at the moment, not knowing what environment they have been acclimatised to and not wanting to shock them by placing them straight outdoors. I'll move them outside in the springtime.

Thanks for having me,

Sam :-)

Welcome to the good ship weetrees Sam. I would suggest that your Elms are placed in the best light available for now. Keep the planting medium just moist and keep talking to us.

Welcome on board. Here's wishing you many happy years ahead in the hobby. Your plans are sound as the trees can and should go outside in the spring. Chinese elm are a great first tree to have. My suggestion would be to concentrate on basic care, learn about repotting in spring and then general pruning throughout the year. However if you're feeling more adventurous let us know what you have in mind and we can comment. We have a chinese elm challenge going on at the moment so you might like to browse through the entries in there to get some ideas and inspiraton.
