Post subject:  So, another new person. Mostly.

Hello,

Im mostly new, Ill be celebrating my 1st birthday in to the bonsai world, in March (I started last March). Mostly I have learnt from another forum which I signed up at the time and from online reading, talking to people, etc. Favourites are bonsai4me and learnt a lot from Graham Potter's youtube videos, along with the usual Walter Pall and Nigel Saunders.

I have a few trees at the moment, Acer P, Chinese Elm (mallsai), the 2 half of the same chinese elm after air layering, an air layered pyracantha (cos, why not) and a new ficus Tigerbark.

None of them are in very good shape at the moment, all for different reasons but they are health and some just need time, others more drastic options which will be explored this spring.

My main pre-trained tree is the Maple, bought from Kaizen. But, it may be experienced a very big hair cut soon, more than likely, to start again with it and develop it better.
Heres some of them.

The elms I am hoping to do some work with this year, mostly just getting rid of most of the tree to develop better but I will have to seek some advance on that sometime soon. They will be quite a long term thing, they are not good right now.
The pyracantha was just for experience really. We have a large one at the back of the garden, one of my first air layers so, why not. Its just this week shown new growth and nice green shots, so I know it was successful and its fairly happy.
The Maple has had a very troubled life so far.. Upon buying it, about a week after, its leaves started to look like leaf scorch but it continued till the tree was entirely gone. Had lengthy discussions on another forum, with many people and theres no clear answer to it. So the hope is to repot (much needed) this week, check out root system for issues, make sure theres no old soil in its roots as that may also have caused an issue and pot it in 100% inorganic substrate. Then the decision as to whether it is healthy enough for a big chop or to wait a year.

Feel free to comment, criticise, etc. Be blunt, it's fine, its a good way of learning, which is after all, what we are all doing. Whether you've done it a month or 40 years :).

Welcome.

The maple has a great trunk!

Consider using Flickr for your photos here - so much easier for the rest of us to see them.

HI Conor, you'll find this place quieter but politer than Bonsainut :)
You'll also get more local knowledge which is good.

Welcome to weetrees and a belated welcome to Bonsai as a hobby.

Looks like a great start. Enjoy your trees and feel free to ask any questions. They're all good species to work with as I'm sure you know.

Re maples and leaf scorch - in my experience it's caused by a lack of water so very regular watering makes a difference - it certainly stopped it happening with my maples. I watered twice a day through the summer last year. You can also give them partial shade as well to cut down on the dehydration but the water supply is the main thing. I wouldn't do a big chop the same time as messing with the roots as that's stressful for the tree.

Hello,

Thanks for all the welcomes. And thank you for the info Gary. Many thought it was leaf scorch then many thought not. It spread to all leaves, no matter whether they got sun or not, it was quite frustrating as it happened within a week of me having it. I'd be surprised if even I could mess a tree up that quickly!
Yeah you are probably right also, on repotting and chopping at the same time, the stress it'd cause. I guess I must practise patience again... I hate that! :).

About the Flickr Brendan, i did wonder why Bobby used it! Lol. Why does the forum find it better? I always found it rather slower and not as applicable in places.
Do only Flickr images actually show up in the forum? Any other places just show up as links?

Hi Conor. My pick would be the Acer. It has good movement in the lower trunk, which is the most important part of the Bonsai.
I would have given it a good pruning back over winter. Its getting a bit late (or early) now, because Acers can bleed badly when pruned in spring.
Probably best to allow a flush of growth and then cut it right back in Midsummer.

I am still using Photobucket for hosting and posting photographs. I'm used to it and have no problems. It automatically reduces image size for forum use, has a modest photo editing built in and a good filing system.

I think Flickr might have a better/easier zoom capability from what people say. I'm on photobucket though and am happy with it.
