Hi everyone! I’m another newbie to the forum after 18 months of bonsai fun. My work friends thought it would be a good joke to give me a bonsai for my birthday last year - bit of a busman’s holiday cos
My ‘day job’ is as a council tree officer! As it is, they’ve only unleashed the beast and my garden is turning into a tiny arboretum:) from one Chinese Elm a mighty (tiny) forest grows.
I’m busy unlearning how to look after the big ‘uns and how to look after the little ‘uns - every Bonsai style pruning cut still gives me the shivers lol. My main aim at the moment is having a pop at a wide variety of species and seeing if I can 1) keep them alive and 2) learning how they like to be treated.
I joined my local south staffs bonsai group and it’s really helped me with my trees, kept up my enthusiasm, taught me loads and introduced me to some great people. Well worth it!
I’ve also learnt that tiny trees can be surprisingly heavy and, as I have hand problems, that some of the trees I’ve aquir d are probably going to have to be moved on already. I can’t lift or manoeuvre them well, or manipulate wire above 2mm ... so it’s shohin all the way for me in the future.
Thankfully I’m in love with the tiny ones as much as the big tiny ones, so that’s not a hardship.
And pots ... oh lord... how is it possible to produce such lovely things ...
