Welcome Xenon

Looking at where you live, you aren't that far from Greenwood Nursery near Nottingham, well worth a visit by anyone thinking of starting this hobby.

Corin is also a sponsor and his site is at the top of the page, he is also a forum member and pops up now and again with useful advice.

Instead of just jumping in have a road trip and have a talk with them at the nursery.

I am sure that you will get loads of advice on here about what to grow, either from a bonsai nursery or even garden centre stock, although the older type family run garden centre is best as their turn over of stock isn't so good so any potential trees have been growing for a few years.

Also try and get to one of the shows around the country, they are a great source for information and give you lots of ideas..... just remember your camera... :201thumbup:

Welcome to weetrees and to Bonsai. Like Paul I'd advise a trip to a good nursery or to a local club to get the best start to the hobby.

Re the trees to start with just make sure you get an easy species - there are loads but for starters: chinese or english elm, privet, lonicera, hornbeam, pyracantha, cotoneaster.

Also avoid a very young small twig in a pot - get one that's got a trunk as wide as your thumb or you'll be bored waiting for a twig to grow big enough.

Welcome on board Xenon

In addition to Pauls advice pop along to your local Bonsai Association/Club. They are a good source of expertise to advise you and most clubs have sales tables/auctions where you can buy trees, pots etc often at a discount to what you would pay at a Nursery. From what I can see I think your nearest clubs are Lincoln or Wisbech.

You also have Banksia Bonsai nearby at Guyhurn. About 40 miles from you.

You've done the right thing by getting a bit of advice before you start. Too many people get their hands on a tree and only contact us when it is dying. Be aware that the majority of trees are killed by taking them into the house which is not where they have been designed to grow for millenia. Try with something which grows well in your area to start with. Ask us anything at all on here or read my 'How to' notes. The only silly questions are the ones which are not asked. Welcome to the friendliest forum around.

Hi and Welcome.

Fuchsia do not make great bonsai. Their branches are not true wood, and they will not take kindly to wiring.
That is not to say it cannot be done, but as a beginner you would be better off with something a bit more traditional.

If you go to a bonsai nursery, eg Greenwoods, or a bonsai club, you will get a better idea of what to aim for.

There is usually someone in each club that has good starter material either VERY cheap or even free. It is well worth a visit and you will be made welcome.
