Good Morning,
New to growing Bonsai's and wanted to ask for some advice. I have had mine now for 2 weeks and been religiously watering and I am getting lots of new shoots growing, how should I manage them?
Also does anyone know what type mine is?
Thank you
Alix

Welcome to weetrees.

You have a chinese elm which is one of the best trees for Bonsai. I think you might be keeping this tree inside which will lead to very long straggly shoots. Ideally you should place it right next to a south facing window so it can get plenty of light but not above a radiator which would dry it out. When the weather warms up a little in spring time (March/April) it'll be much happier if it's placed outside.

Very basic pruning would be to let the shoots extend to 6-8 leaves and then cut back to two on each shoot. However I wouldn't do this on this tree until it's established outside in the spring. It won't hurt to let it run a bit long and then cut it back. Styling it via branch removal or placement is whole other story but basically don't let it get too bushy - keep the structure simple. You should be able to see a trunk, some primary branches then secondary and tertiary branches / twigs.

Yes, Chinese elm. Its nice to see a straightish trunk, which is preferable to the horrible 'S' shapes on sale. Signs of lack of light are already showing in the growth.

I hope 'watering religiously' doesn't mean watering everyday whether it needs it or not. You need to gradually learn to recognise signs in the soil and the tree that let you know when water is needed. The soil needs to be damp, not wet and not dry. Give it a chance to dry a little between waterings.

Ideally, you want to place it outside when the weather improves. They do much better outdoors.
