Post subject:  Introduction time from me.

Hello all,

Ok a wee bit about myself.

Male, 44, Scottish, still living in Scotland (west of Scotland).

First interested in Japanese/Asian culture as a kid. Tried to grow a couple of bonsai in my twenties and failing miserably.

Started again two years ago with a shop bought “s” style elm.

At the moment I have two “s style” Chinese elms. I’ve just ordered a five tree group of red dawns. Ordered blind but I’m sure I’ll find/see some beauty in them (love trees).

I also have three Chinese juniper seedlings, one common juniper, two box hedging and a purple acer sapling. Hope to add a couple of more varieties soon.

I will apologise just now for not knowing or using the correct terminology or Latin names of plants.

Please show patience with me.

Thanks.

Welcome. From what you've said it seems that you're currently buying low cost trees. Instead, have you considered collecting wild trees? In your location there's huge potential to collect trees of much better quality than the ones you've bought, and for free. This month is a good time to go out and collect trees. Of course the ones you've bought will be great for training your skills on while you wait for collected trees to recover.

Thanks all.

I’ll get pics up when I can access them all in a few days (snow permitting).

Peter, yes I thought about collecting to try get some larger specimens but for now I’ll resist because I’m not sure I’ll be able to recognise what I dig at least whilst there out of leaf.

In the summer I may mark a possible subject or two for next winters dormancy period.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Weegrower and welcome to the forum. As has been said there are some superb wild trees to be collected where you are. Best piece of advice, join a bonsai club if there is one in your area. Perhaps one of our more northerly members can help with location.

David
