Hey, I'd used the forum once before when I was still in my teens, I think about 17-19? Trying to make a bonsai out of a conker I had.

Since then I'd been collecting a variety of different trees and practising my techniques.

Hello and welcome! I think I started off with a conker and an acorn. Still obsessed with groing from seed

Welcome back. Have you still got your original trees?

Unfortunately the conker didn't take. I didn't really know about stratifying back then, I do have a Chinese elm I'd got not long after moving out of my parents still, my sagerita died unfortunately, I overwatered it and then thought it was a good idea to use garden soil and defoilated it.

Really wish I remembered the website sooner!

Got a lovely pomegranate not long after leaving my parents place as well, just beginning to budbreak now.

Oh do conkers and oak translate well to bonsai? I heard conker's leaves don't tend to reduce in size and the tree doesn't ramify properly. Do you still have them?

Yes, the leaves do stay quite big but when they look out of proportion just cut them off and the tree will grow some smaller ones for you. Ramification will never be as fine as some other species, but that is just the nature of the tree. This is one of mine. I have had it for about 20 years and it is about 4" high. You can see in the photo where I have cut off some of the larger leaves but I left the leaf stalks on so they can drop off naturally after a week or so.

Search google images for horse chestnut bonsai and you will see what can be done.
