Post subject:  Hello from Yeovil

Forgot to post in here first to introduce myself, the names Keith(any way to change username?), been a fan of bonsai ever since watching The Karate Kid in the early eighties and the delightful Mr Miyagi.

Over the years I have come and gone from owning bonsais, just your crappy garden shop ones really. It’s only over the last year or so that I’ve got a bit more interest, got myself a ficus retusa which I kept for about a year before I moved it on, do have some cuttings from it that are sat in greenhouse. Couple of weeks back I purchased 4 new bonsai which can be seen http://weetrees.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=18309

In time I’d like to do a forest as they have always fascinated me and get my collection up, it’s quite an expensive hobby I’ve found.

So basically that’s me, oh forgot to add I’m 45 with a wife and 2 kiddies.

Oh would it be an idea to go on a bonsai class or would I be better off learning from here and my mistakes?

Heyllo Kieth, bonsai is certainly a good way to spend time outdoors, its almost like meditation for me, i lose track of time so easily when tending to the trees and plants indoors and outdoors, and at night time i have so many succulents and cacti to admire, i even keep aquatic plants in an aquascape i have, not that i am obsessed with green things.... perhaps lol

Personally, im learning from my (many) mistakes, though a class would be a great idea at this point in time now i too am taking it more seriously! I am fortunate that there is an awesome bonsai seller nearby, he always gives helpful advice, and the members here are always helpful too, so take something from all corners i say!

Welcome mate. I personally learn from wherever I can, if you have a local club I'd imagine that would be ideal mate- good source of material too.

I had to change mine too as it was doing my head in. The late great Stymie was kind enough to sort that for me so not sure who to message now.

Welcome

Regarding a forest, I just got 20 larch whips [several years old] for £20, so its cheap if you know where to look.

Its a hobby that you can make as expensive or as cheap as you like, A number of my trees were given to me some years ago to see what I could do with them............ Improve them every year

Your closest clubs are at Taunton or near Shaftesbury

A lot of garden centres sell hedging plants like beech, hornbeam and hawthorn, which are good value for making forest groups (especially if you can get some in a sale) and you usually get about 10 plants together. I got 10 blackthorn in a pot reduced to £6 today.

Chris Thomas, he had a sales table at the Swindon show last weekend. He does other shows, like Exmouth, Heathrow, Warminster, Salisbury etc

He doesn't have a web site, but give him a ring and he may send you some, not sure what the postage would be??

He has a nursery just north of Swansea

Tel 07798 798194

Or as above use hedging and then grow them on in the ground

Also get in with a club and you will soon have some stock

Try beechwood trees / 3fatpigs.co.uk for Larch. I also got 20 for £25 odd from them back in november. They only ship during the dormant season so you might have to be quick!!
