Good Evening Bonsai Boffins, I’ve been interested in Bondai for around a year now. I had a starter pack given as a present, unfortunately despite a few seedlings rising they did all die. A few months on I collected a whole bunch of seeds with the in-laws (after realising Bonsai was not a specific species of tree)... Again these became seedlings and although they lasted longer, also bit the dust! Anyway, I haven’t had the chance to continue over the last few months due to study commitments which have now passed. After doing a whole load of work in the garden over the last month I began to get the urge to have another crack at this Bonsai malarkey. I will try some seeds again when the time is right (going for a natural propagation rather than the fridge method I’ve used previously) and will be on the look out for some nursery trees over the next few months which I can learn on. Anyway, I’m rambling... I’m a total beginner. I’ve got a couple of books to read and will likely have many questions. Cheers, Martin |

HI AND WELCOME Growing from seed is a VERY long process, we would be talking 10 to 20 years. You would be better growing from nursery stock, or visiting a proper bonsai nursery, or join a bonsai society. |

Are you in the countryside? Easy to find a few field maple, oak, beech hornbeam or hazel saplings from last year. Still a very slow process but the material is free. |

I’m not in the countryside anymore. But I am when I go back to my parents, so may try and have a look then. |

Hi Keith, Yes I understand that it is a long process when done that way, however it’s still alluring to nurture something mightn’t from the seed. Will definitely be on the lookout for nursery stock in due course though, appreciate the advise. |

Welcome to weetrees and to Bonsai as a hobby. I'm sure you'll find it as rewarding and as stimulating as we all do. Like the others I'd suggest getting hold of some material to play with from day one rather than waiting for seeds to grow as that means waiting quite a long time before you can do Bonsai (pruning wiring etc). Also to be successful starting with seeds you'll need to become proficient at trunk development which is a skill you wont have immediately and is not as exciting as getting out the scissors. A club would be good as they're cheap to join and you'll probably be given small trees worth more than your membership in the first few months. |

Hello and welcome! I would never discourage groeing from seed as I love it but I'd certainly recomend getting your hands on some garden centre material or dig up a few finds to have a play with. That way you're also less likely to kill the the seedlings when they grow up and the fiddling begins too :). |

I’ll have a look at joining a club, thanks. Which species should I be looking at in particular at the garden centre? Or can anyone show me a few examples of good garden centre finds which can be practiced on with wire and scissors as Gary suggested. Might help me know what I’m looking for! |
