Privet, Beech, Hornbeam, (from the hedging sections), Lonicera nitida (or other small leaved varieties), cotoneaster, pyracantha. Elms if they are available in garden centres would be excellent. Evergreens - junipers, boulevards. If you see something you like, search on here and if there are 100s of posts its probably a good species to get. Or just ask. The difference between an easy species and a difficult species will be huge in the early days.

Unfortunately there is no club in Leeds the nearest is Sheffield

If you can get to Harrogate Flower Show this weekend you will have a chance to get some cheap bonsai, and see a displayof some 200 trees.
