Post subject:  Hi from Worcestershire

So I got a 'Grow it' bonsai tree pack for Xmas from a friend! Have planted in the pots and have some shoots coming up. So far they are between 1cm and 3cm and I have taken the bags off them. Just waiting to see how they grow now. I know it's a long process but hopefully I'll have some trees to nurture :)

A few questions as a newbie:
1. Can you keep them indoors? I read they need to feel the changes in temp etc just like the trees outside.
2. At what point do I take the shoots and transplant?

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to weetrees!
It will be several years before you can get a bonsai from seeds. But in the meantime, you get a massive amount of happiness from them while you grow them.

Definitely keep them indoors this winter while they're tender shoots. In future years it depends on the species.

You can probably put them in larger pots in spring. Try not to disturb the roots yet.

Welcome to weetrees. They will almost definitely need to go outside at some point but now it'll be far too cold. You'll need to acclimatise them in the spring. The big risk with seedlings is any change you ake to their environment or the soil (potting on) may well kill them so you need to be vary careful. Best of luck. As said by others this is the slowest process to make/grow Bonsai. You'll probably have very little to do for the first few years except keep them alive, and it'll be a good 10 before you have anything that looks like a bonsai. So enjoy, but if you want to learn bonsai skills you could benefit from getting some bigger cheap trees to practice on.

Just re reading yr post. If you have planted the seeds in pots , have you one seed per pot or multiple. If you have multiple but they have a few inches of space then I would leave all of them till next year to allow them to build some roots. Moving them early will cause failures.

Hi, sorry for the late reply I don't seem to be getting notification emails.

There was a pack of mixed seeds for each pot. I have 3 that have come up in one pot, two in another and one in the last two pots.

I am patient and enjoy tending and watching them grow, having had a greenhouse for a few years. Thinking I may buy a more established one to keep me going in the meanwhile though.

Seedlings are not in any way going to give you a sense of growing bonsai. You must have bought them as the idea of bonsai interests you?

I'd seriously advise you to buy a beginner friendly tree.

Hi jason. As earlier I would keep these in the pots till next year and not disturb them yet. Did the packs of seeds advise the tree variety?????

They were a secret santa gift! I do like gardening etc so someone must have made the connection.

It didn't say what mix of seeds there were - probably only basic ones.
