Ive always loved the looks of Bonsai tree's and ive always been tempted to buy a fully grown one from a garden center but the mrs always freaks at the price so its never happened, anyway i think out of guilt she has bought me a bonsai growing kit for christmas look forward to getting some help |

Hi Chris and welcome. Don't just get seeds - they take years to develop. Get a couple of trees as well, to learn on. You can get good stuff at excellent prices from our sponsors at the top of the page. J. |

Hi Chris , being a landscape gardener you will no doubt have to remove a lot of trees and shrubs from gardens which can be used for bonsai. I am a gardener but not a landscaper but i get plenty of material to dig up. |

Welcome Chris, Jerry here, age 48. As others mentioned, the "bonsai kit" route is not the way to go - there's a very very very small chance of success. By far the vast majority of Bonsai are produced from either commercially field-grown material (from China, Japan, Korea and minor production in Europe) or are cut down to size from larger collected trees and bushes. You might want to take a look at this thread from Smithy showing some of the stuff he has collected recently - it should give you an idea of the type of material you should be looking out for: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5485 |

Welcome Chris, as has been mentioned seeds will take a very long time to create into a bonsai tree, have a look at this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1633&hilit=+pine+baby. You can bonsai a large amount of different shrubs trees etc and being a gardener you will have access to alot of material so keep a look out for anything your digging up like Lonicera, Cotoneaster, Hawthorns etc. I'm still rather new myself and not a big gardener but there is a lot of stuff you can use, also there is alot of stuff which is unsuitable so have a search around on here which varietys will suit bonsai better. Welcome to the forum |

Hi Chris and welcome. I visit Carterton every couple of months or so. Can always call in if you need advice from an 'old hand'. The others are right. Get yourself a couple of inexpensive trees and learn to keep them alive. Some grow bonsai from seed but it is a very long job indeed. |
