Hi all, totally new to bonsai except getting me mam a seedling when I was 8, 39 years ago. (she still has it). I've got myself a few field maples only 2/3 years old (would you recommend putting them in the ground for a couple of years), two oaks (think they might be older, they've been nibbled by rabbits) a hawthorn "I think" and a beach about 3/4 years old. Oh and a horse chestnut I got last year. I got the older ones before the sap started rising, they've all got leaves on now so I think I've not killed them. Most of them I've put in a large homemade propagater 4ft x 2ft x 8inch in my greenhouse.its going to get too hot in there soon but I'm unsure whether to put them in pots or in the ground. I hope I've got the patience for this type of hobby (or lifestyle)

If you want them to stay about their current size put them in pots. If you want them to get significantyly larger plant them in the ground. |

Some pics would be nice, we work best with something visual...... How about the seedling you gave your mum? Just harden them of slowly and put them in pots (pond baskets?) for a year, that will get you some time to get to grips with this new addiction of yours. Maybe think about getting in touch with a club in you neck of the woods, it is great to meet likewise afflicted people. They will help and advise you. |

Welcome, Halfmast. Just looking at your pictures, your trees are basically 'Sticks-in-pots'. This is how most people start off, but after several years they realize their trees are not Bonsai and get bored and leave the hobby. What many may not know is that the young trees need to be grown on as fast as possible and NOT pruned for the first few years of their lives. This also means planting in the open ground (with well prepared soil) or in a big pot, which will allow the roots to spread, which in turn helps the tree grow. Girth, Taper are movement are what you are looking for with any tree, and good surface roots are a bonus also. I, personally would not bother with Horse Chestnut or Sycamore as the leaves are large and the growth coarse. Probaly the best source of material I have found is old garden shrubs. Also check out your local garden centres or nurseries for more established plants you can purchase and then work on. |
