'tis a good thing that we live on a hill or we'd be wading by now. Lots of wet after the extended dry spell is welcomed with mixed feelings. I'm even considering replacing the 'umbrellas' over the Pine's pots so soon. I don't think that I'll be watering outside today.
See you all at Elsecar on the 19th?

Yesterday was the first rain we'd had for weeks and my trees this morning looked really happy to have had rain water rather than tap water but about an hour ago we had a really heavy hailstorm. Hope that's not going to become too regular.

We just got back from 3 days around Venice in +20° heat. The bottom of the garden is waterlogged and it's got very cold. Good job I bought some Jamesons back, twas nice to put the fire on and have a sip yesterday. The wet weather was good for the cat sitter though as she didn't have to water my trees this time.

Don how do you do your 'umbrellas'? Do you cover the whole tree or just the base and what do you make them with?

Why put an umbrella over a tree? What harm will a lot of rain do if it's in free draining soil?

Peter.
Pines in particular and most Junipers prefer to dry out from time to time and even in free-draining stuff, we don't get that over the Winter months. I cut disks of visquine to cover the pots, cut to the centre and make a hole to go around the tree trunks. This can be closed at the cut with a clothes peg or paper clip and sometimes held down with a couple of small stones. I wouldn't dream of covering the whole tree with an umbrella. I thought that almost everyone on here must have read my notes. Sorry if I mislead anyone.
