I need to stop reading Bonsai books and websites...

More often than not, every time I get to reading bonsai material I discover a new tree that 'I just gotta have it!'

My latest infatuation... Coastal Redwood, aka. California Redwood. (Sequoia sempervirens)

What a fantastic tree!

From everything I've seen so far they are incredibly difficult to germinate and just as difficult to get them to survive the first year....

So... to quote the genius that is, Barney Stinson...

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!

Between the Japanese Sakura's, the Japanese Maples, the Japanese Cedar's, the Chinese Elms, and now the Coastal Redwood, im gonna be busy! :suro:

Why do I do this to myself?! hahaha!

grab whatever you can. More trees = more experience with different tendencies, and less likely to over work trees

As soon as your garden is full or your better half complains you'll slow down a bit. The hobby is rather addictive.

I have one & to be honest I haven't found them hard to care for, it's not a bonsai (yet) but I bought it last year as a 3 ft tall, slightly thicker than a pencil whip starter tree & its now 6ft tall tree that has probably tripled in girth. I literally had it in a large pond basket which was sat in a tray of water during the growing season & fed the hell out of it with what ever food I had. It might be a different story when it's in a small pot.

Aw yeah, once they are past the first year they are fully hardy and usually do well... its just the germination... looking at 22% germination rate from lab tested seeds with a very very very good and very old parent tree. Most of the trees in the UK will only have about a 5% germination rate and then comes the first year when seedlings apparently tend to die.

Thankfully the seeds are sold by weight and they are tiny tiny so you get a good 100 or more in a single pack for a couple quid or less so i'll be throwing them around like sand on a beach and using various germination and seedling care methods and hopefully a handful will survive long term.

Also, if you have any pics I would love to see!

Coast Redwood - cuttings are very successful.
