Taking a walk in the park admiring the winter images of the old trees, complete with balls of mistletoe, I came across this....(photo 2)

Note the large bulge on the right hand side of the left tree at the top. At some point a large branch has broken off and its regrown raft style, with the branches growing straight up.

What is the reason for this birds nest growth that happens?

That birds nest (balls) is mistletoe.

Wow, just reading up on mistletoe, that's fascinating I had no idea.

My wife says it's dangerous to stand underneath it. No idea what she's on about.

Some years ago I rubbed some berries into my apple tree bark [real tree] and they took.

I left them to grow for quite a few years without more than one or two berries.

I then cut it back quite hard [a fiend wanted the cuttings to make Xmas decorations] and low and behold it has been covered in berries ever since. It's not a huge tree either

The spacecraft is a TIE Silencer from the new Star Wars film. I just saw the video on my twitter feed. I think it is a stunt by eBay who built it to surprise a few small Star Wars fans.

I had mistletoe growing on a bonsai crab apple but it wasn’t doing the tree much good so I removed it.
