Stuck in Aberdeen because of the Beast from the East (aka Snow!), so I am turning to WeeTree for a bit of entertainment...

Seen in a news feed from Bonsai Tree (a South African based bonsai retailer), a successful attempt at a DOUBLE AIR LAYERING!

I am still to succeed at One simple air layering...

Admittedly the lower layer was less developed and had to be left there a bit longer

Still, a good achievement!

It can be done on vigorous species but as above, one usually suffers.

Just a note that the moss should be left in a bunch and just potted on, otherwise any very small roots could be easily broken off. They need all the roots that they can to survive.

Leave it a couple of years and the roots will have hardened off and the moss has usually rotted away or just falls off at re potting.

I didn't want new growers to do this at this years air layerings

Just to be clear, it wasnt my work. Just something I saw on a Bonsai news.

If you want to smile and shake your head in disbelief, my only attempt to air layer was quite ambitious... and unsuccessful...

I chose the branch of a Birch tree in my back garden. The branch was probbaly 15cm in diameter, at an angle, about 3 meters above ground level. Also, add that the branch was above my greenhouse too for extra difficulty.

I knew very little about the technique but that didn't stop me!

Anyway, long story short, 6 month later the bark had reformed over the area...

Birch are usually one of the easiest trees to air layer. They are vigorous growers so you have to make the ring bark depth substantial. If you want a mature looking Birch quickly then air layering is the way to go. Why not try again and make sure all cambium is removed?

I would... the tree had to be removed last year...It’s now feeding my stove...

For my information, was there a chance that, if properly done, a air layer could succeed on very large diameter?

I was always told to cut the layer, then scrape up and down between the cuts before finishing off to make sure the cuts are completely clean.[Make sure you use a very sharp knife or scarpel. This makes sure that the layer has all the bark and soft tissue is removed so it's won't try and repair itself and promote roots.

Most of mine have worked over the years

I agree impressive work they did there.

Climate - makes all the difference. They are in the Cape - southern tip of Africa. Their winter would not be regarded as the worst summer we've seen here...
