Hello all,

I bought some acers online which have turned out to be grafted. No mention in the description so pretty gutted especially paying £45 for them when I could have bought trees described as grafts half the price.

I ALWAYS try to buy seed grown purely for aesthetics. I have no intention to bonsai them but wanted to know if can plant them deeper in the pot so the graft is just above soil level. The graft would need to be buried 2-3” deeper. Would there be any detrimental effect?

Thanks,

Mark

Commercially bought J Maples are almost always grafted - especially if you buy a named cultivar. Planting lower could be done, but will it leave you with any root flare? I'd consider air or ground layering above the graft if it's a type that can survive on its own roots - I've read that not all can

Shouldn't be a problem, but also consider whether you can air-layer them above the graft to grow them on their own roots. Not all maple cultivars will grown on their own roots, but many will.
You probably already know that named varieties of trees will almost always be grafted (unless specially grown from layers or cuttings) as they won't propagate true from seed.

Another option is to grow them as stock trees and air layer branches off when the time is right. You can train the branches that will become layered to have movement and taper while attached to the tree, then air layer them off when they reach good thickness.

Thanks all.

It crossed my mind to air layering but they look a few years away from that. Interesting information that not all verities will grow from their own roots. I didn’t know that.

Thanks again.
