Hi Hope its ok to post this here? In my day job I look after woodlands and I find the forms of trees endlessly fascinating hence the interest in bonsai. I made a short video about some of the dangerous trees in the woods and the forms they take. Not the perfect image of a tree but beautiful in their senescence I think. |

This video was fascinating, thanks for posting it, so interesting how they send roots down through the rotten core |

Interesting and thanks. I too loved the one that just wanted to live and sent down roots through the trunk.

Hi Sorry I should have been clearer. What I meant was trying to get some roots coming out of the bottom of the branch then when they were strong enough threading the roots back down through the hollow trunk into the soil. Not Sure if it would work. Cheers |

That should be feasible thought it would be a bit fiddly. Could be a bit hit and miss getting the roots to develop from exactly the right point, and you might be left with a bit of a mess at the point where you did the layer. An easier way to get the same effect might be to graft a seedling into the position where you want the roots. This would essentially be the same process as root grafting, only higher up the trunk. For example you would plant your seedling in the middle of the hollow trunk, then graft the upper portion to the main tree, either by thread or approach grafting (I don't know how well that works with birch, if that's the species you want to work with). |
