I'm amazed at this video. Is it me or did the professional doing the tutorial imply that dead branches on Larch will backbud? How can you retain credibility when you say stuff like that?

His Juniper raft video where he snapped a branch using his foot also made me think 'OMG'. Has anyone else seen these?

Yeah Peter Chan is not fit to be teaching others, I gather he was a big player in the scene many years ago but has failed to change with the times. I've not been to herons but the alot of the trees on his website seem to be nothing more than nursery stock in bonsai pots sold for insulting sums of money.

I'm just concerned that beginners will cut off the very branches they should keep when doing a first style of raw material. Only years later after they realise it won't backbud will they have to either chuck it or go for literati.

My problem with them is that his business model seems to be preying on the ignorance of beginners.

And his videos clearly show his skills/knowledge are not those of a bonsai professional. In the past he has won awards and had books published so who knows what has happened

Wow those trees are vastly overpriced. Do you think it is because it's situated in a fairly affluent part of the country?

That could be a major factor. I think he deserves some credit, he is self taught in a era before the internet. I think his main focus is deciduous so these demo style conifer videos don't really suit him.

It just comes across as so arrogant with all the poor videos and overpriced trees.

Pricing outrageous, but obviously tapping into a market if he's still in business, but it's not Bonsai as we know it! malsai on steroids

I went to a couple of day workshops with Peter in my early years as a bonsai enthusiast.
I gained some useful experience from the first day, but nothing from the second other
than my conclusion that Peter did not listen, and simply expected pupils/students to do
what he told them without any further enquiry or discussion.

Herons was a revelaton to me in my early days (2003/4), as the first (and largest) bonsai
nursery I had ever visited. There were some magnificent trees on display, priced in the £1000's,
but subsequent experience of Windybanks left Herons a very poor second.

It's a bit of a tragedy really.
