Aweful. I expect the trees were probably stolen to order or for export though. You'd have to be an idiot to steal something and not know what to do with it.

I wonder if they had buyers lined up already. Trees of that kind of quality would be easily recognisable so doubt will be seen in public again. Such a shame

Quite possibly. There not likely to show up in a local japanese event for the reasons you state so it'll be a private sale or shipping abroad. Unless the thieves are just idiots. Sadly you rarely hear of stolen trees being recovered.

The level of theft in Japan is very low compared to the rest of the world.

It would be my guess that it wasn't a Japanese person who stole them.

I am always sorry to hear of the theft of bonsai though.

I have just been telephoned by BBC Wiltshire [local radio] and I am on air about 1645 to discuss this theft

Quite a few of the thefts in the UK end up with them being dumped in a poor state, as the thieves find that they can't sell them on easily
