I bought my self a strimmer and a rotivator this year . After years of hand digging and weeding i finally gave in and managed to do half of my plot in 4 hours :thum:

Nice, That's some good going! Took me 2 hrs just to strim half mine lol. A rotovator sounds like a useful acquisition, is it petrol?

It looks so much better after a strim, moved a load of trees there this morning, can wait to get them in the ground, would have done a few today but my little girl stood in the pond and got a Welly full lmao

Four stroke . Its a Qualcast from homebase . £200 . Its not a beast but i think for the money it saves alot of work . On unworked ground i had to go over it three times . On ground that had been unworked but covered over it was fine . Obviously the more times i use it the easier it will get .

My Dad had an acre of veggie garden. He had a rotovator and got it turned over very quickly. You can get all sorts of attachments as well. My Dad's was like a Swiss army knife!

See if you can borrow or hire one from a neighbouring allotment holder. If you buy a good one, others will want a lend!
Also remember if you rotavate weeds into the soil, they will reappear, only worse!

also remember that if you hand dig and remove every single weed they will re appear and you will give up and end up rotarvating it

Have you thought about the "no dig" method?

I visited an allotment plot with a council lady last week, so i should have my own green space within a week or so, and I have been swotting up on all things allotment related, and this no dig approach seems to be very trendy right now. The only downside is with any new allotment, lack of compost, nutrients and mulch, which is essential for the no dig method.

Apparently it decreases the number of weeds that pop up, and locks in more nutrients than it would if the soil was regularly tilled. As i have no personal experience with this, i cannot really make any observations, but it is something i will look into once i get myself established on the new plot.

Congrats on being granted an allotment so quickly! I'm using no dig too, I posted a YouTube link on post 3, I've got the book too by Charles Dowding and totally recommend it.

Im using weed membrane as my Mulch and just scattering the odd bit of manure about underneath. Then I only need to cut a hole and dig just enough out for each plant.

The lack of light will kill off the weeds underneath and the worms will turn it into lovely soil.

Here's how it's looking at the moment
