Every winter, I really enjoy the warmth and joy that my stove gives me. It feels just right to burn local wood from cuttings in my garden or free to collect in my nearby parks. Free energy. Also, the feeling of making the most of these logs doesn’t stop there. I’ll then pour the ash at the base of many of my plants and trees in my garden but also I’ll have a few spoons of ash at the top of my bonsais.

Anyone else does it too?

I had a wood burner in Portugal. I always put the ash on the compost heap. I only needed to empty the pan once a week ( it was a big pan), so it made good layers in the heap.

Try burning bones on your stove, if you're not vegetarian, it'll add even more goodness.

I don't think ash has a suitable structure for growing bonsai in pots. It's too fine and will just reduce percolation speeding up the need for repotting. Not so much of an issue in the garden where the whole gravity / water column process is different and it will just break down.

I dont put it on my Bonsai but it goes in my compost bins and I spread it on my allotment.

Ha! Yes! I think I knew that fact at some point. Totally forgot about it. We do not eat much meat but I will certainly recycle any bones that way now that you've reminded me.
