after hearing about tree theft has anyone thought of chipping a tree? like we do with cats and dogs.. only a small hole would need to be drilled somewhere and it would soon heal over.

It's a nice idea, but only useful if the tree in question is recovered. I'd bet 99% of stolen trees are never seen again and probably a large portion end up in the compost heap.

I wonder if the thefts are opportunistic or if the thief is targeting good bonsai?

I have thought of placing a tree on a stand in the front of my house which is up a short private drive so not visible from the road (there are 5 houses that share the drive). I have always been too scared to do this as I assume someone will just see it and walk off with it. I considered wiring the pot tight to the stand, but then it becomes a complete hassle.

My view is that once it is gone a chip will be no help.

Anyone considering chipping their trees see this........... https://www.bon-tag.com/

You will see their stands at most shows in the UK.

A good way of tree identification......... but it depends on the tree being found.

Once stolen I suspect the trees end up in private collections and so will never be seen. Only the idiotic or ignorant would show a high quality stolen tree. I suspect some are stolen opportunistically and end up dead in a few days.

Does anyone know of a stolen tree ever being recovered?

I know of several, John Trott had one stolen during a display at an Agricultural show, it was found some months later having been sold on, but it was in such a state, it had been ruined.

Dai ichi at Redditch had several thefts overnight but they couldn't sell them and they were dumped several weeks later in a lay by with pots broken and branches snapped, all just about dead.

It's not helped when the TV and Press tell everyone that they are worth £XXXXXXX so the thieves just take what they want, NOT knowing what is a good or bad bonsai............ but then find out that they can't sell them easily

Sadly no good news there either. :1crybaby: It seems once a tree is stolen it's effectively gone for ever, one way or another.
