I have a board on pinterest with a load of pictures like this:

I think they look great. I'm going to give it a go.

Have you tried making these? Any hints & tips?

I have not made a moss terrarium, but I have made a bottle terrarium.

Gravel drainage layer
Activated carbon or even just washed charcoal (with no chemicals in it)
A good free draining soil mix, bit of orchid bark, sphagnum moss mixed in, you can buy premade and its really cheap.

Spoon on the end of a stick, long tweezers and aquarium scissors.

In mine I currently have java moss, mosaic plant, polka dot plant, pilea depressa, schefflera and calenthea.

As a clean up crew I have added springtails and dwarf Albino isopods.

They are good fun

Sorry if the photos are not the best, it's hard to get a photo of it with the reflection.

Oh yeah and in-between the gravel layer and carbon place a layer of fine insect mesh to stop wash through.

It looks excellent --thanks for the tips!

It's like a complete ecosystem.

I suppose the advantage of a wide neck jar is you could get your whole hand in there.

How do you know how much water to add?

Also, do you add the gravel, carbon and soil in equal amounts? Or maybe it depends on the shape of the container?

And, sorry for the dumb questions, is that two meshes you add, between gravel & carbon and another between carbon and soil?

Yes a wide neck jar is a lot easier to work on. I'll show you a photo now of the top of the bottle I used.

When it comes to watering it's just so the soil is evenly moist, you will see that the soil is all the same colour and you'll want to see a little water trickle in between the drainage layer. Don't panic if you do over water as the drainage layer will cope with this. Just leave the top of it and it will naturally evaporate. I only water mine about once a month if I leave the cork out and prune nearly all plants on a weekly basis to keep them all at a reasonable size and to stop one taking over the other.

I don't think you can add to my of each layer, as long as you have the space.

I've gone with about 3 to 5 cm of gravel. Then the mesh, on top of this a thin layer of activated carbon and finally around 5cm of soil at what I call the front and about 7 to 8 cm of soil at the back.

So it's gravel, mesh, carbon and then soil.

No they are not dumb questions at all. Ask away :)

Thank you for the compliment and yes it is basically a self contained eco system. I could leave the cork on and not touch it, but one plant would end up out competing the others and I'd end up with just one, hence why I maintain and prune them :)

How on earth do you get in there to prune them?

I have a pair of thin 12 inch aquarium scissors, that are on a slight angle and a 14 inch tweezers that I remove the larger foliage, anything small I leave on the soil to break down.
