I have had a good weekend in the garden doing general jobs and weeding and trimming of my trees. Decided to do my yearly prune of back to 7 buds on my garden wisteria ( in the photo background ) and found 2 air layers which i had put on in the very early year.
One had a good amount of roots so have potted this. the second did not have roots so have left this on the wisteria.

Good result, Richard.

You sound as if you already know this but I heard a good easy guide to wisteria pruning on telly the other day. Cut to 7 buds in the 7th month then cut to 2 buds in the 2nd month.

Yes daryl. I tend to leave the 7/7 till August but follow the 2 buds in February.
My bonsai wisteria very rarely extends by more than 7 buds so I will take off the end buds and then back to 2 in February.
What was interesting with the air layer was that one was very wet and one relatively dry. It was the dry which had achieved roots.

My first thought was that it should be the other way around but, maybe because wisteria like water, the drier one has tried harder to go in search of water and the wetter one hasn't bothered to make much effort because the water was readily available.

I am playing with two Wisteria projects. Both grown from seed. Both in Tanuki since July using drift wood. I had never heard of the above cut back recommendation. Will try!

What I heard is that young wisteria (under 10 years?!?!) won't produce flowers?

Also, you're expecting MORE than 7 buds growth?

It can take 10 years for seed grown to produce flowers this is why most shop bought are grafted. On my wisteria over the pergola I can get extensions up to 10 new leaf buds. On my bonsai I sometimes get up to 5 or 6 but they are also very short internodes.
