Post subject:  Thoughts on a Japanese style garden

Hello all.

For a long while now ive liked all things Japanese, especially gardens. Having just moved in to a new home I now have a bit more room. Luckily, there is already a bit of rockery with some large stones, and some I have just bought to make up the difference that I need.

Ive looked into all the plants needed, from Japanese holly through to junipers and pines. Its not a huge area, but large enough, so long as the trees are not allowed to get out of hand size wise.

Im having thoughts about what soil to use, as not in pots like bonsai.

The concerns are about these trees, I have a large maple at the back, and some ground cover plants.
1 decent raw material Chinensis that I plan to shape as it gets larger
3 Rigida
2mugo pine.

All are in what looks to be just normal soil at the moment.

The internet says to use a soil that is free draining, obviously not like we use in a pot.

Would anyone have any thoughts?, or am I worrying too much lol

Knowing me, in ten years il want to dig them out and put them in pots ;-)

Soil type will depend on the plants that you use, although most plants will grow in most soils.

I'm in roughly a similar situation :)

Do some soil tests with a testing kit
Check across different areas of your garden as it can differ - especially where there are long established areas of planting
Do some drainage tests - especially where you plan to put trees that prefer free-draining soil like pines

Thanks for the replies, appreciated.

My soils are heavy damp clay soils, so after a bit more reading, did this.

Bought a load of compost and a load of fine grit from a garden centre, mixed it with the existing soil.

I must say, im surprised how much of a difference its made

Will add a pic if I get the time tomorrow.
