Hi all,
This has been growing in a pot in the back garden for about a month or so now. Does anyone know what it is?

It's called liverwort and tends to grow where the soil is very wet - too wet for most bonsai trees. Water less and let the top surface dry out a bit between waterings. You can scrape it off quite easily. |

Yes its a common pest weed in pots where an organic compost is poorly draining and becomes stagnant and it can rapidly smother the soil surface in some cases |

Thanks for your replies, and they make sense. The plant in the pot is a grapevine cutting from a couple of years ago that is in a general purpose compost, hence the poor drainage (I will reduce watering). Is it worth repotting now (I know it should heve been done before coming into leaf)? It is healthy and growing pretty well. Thanks Jules |

Liverwort is quite interesting, to me anyway, it is more like moss than anything else, in that it doesn't root down into your soil and is quite easy to remove. Also like moss it reproduces by spores, so it means it doesn't grow from seeds, it must have come from spores already in that soil or from somewhere nearby. If you're really worried about the poor drainage you could "slip pot" the tree into a bigger pot with free draining soil, leaving the majority of the root ball untouched. Then repot it early next spring with some proper root pruning. |

I had liverwort appear all over this Hawthorn some months after I repotted it, Obviously the mix wasn't suiting it as the foliage was dying back, It even threw a branch!! I did what Don (Stymie) and another friend (The chap that gave me the tree in the first place!) told me to do in such circumstances and lifted the tree and compost and put it in to sphagnum moss! I made a wooden box and lined it with sphagnum moss then dropped it in, Covered it and the following year it was much better, I left it in the box for three years and finally repotted it in spring this year!, It looks great now!!  I later stuck an ailing Juniper in a corner, That's back in a dish now too!  John
