Has here anyone got any tips on managing their trees during the current extreme weather and especially when going away from home on holidays?

Leave a sprinkler on low next to the trees? When I go away I move them all to full shade and give them a good soak and they've been ok. But never been away in a heatwave before |

I put mine against a north facing house wall where there is no sun at all and I have a very well trained neighbour who knows that she should water them all thoroughly every day whether she thinks they need it or not! Or find a friend in a local bonsai club who will foster them while you are away. Depending how many you have, another option is to bring them inside and put in the bath with a few inches of water in the bottom. For me they are like pets. You can’t just leave them and hope for the best. |

I have, when no other option was possible for a week one summer, cleared a bed under a tree against a wall that is always in shade, Then I put a sprinkler in the middle of the space with a timer on it and then watered the whole area completely soaking it for a couple of days. I made sure the timer worked, and made a note of how far it watered. The day I left I put all my pots down on the ground, covered them with 3 bags of potting soil, and soaked them. The potting soil had to cover the sides and bottom, and I made sure I had enough to lightly cover the top of the pot, too. The sprayer would have been enough, but I wanted the security of knowing that the trees would be OK even if it failed. I think modern timers are more reliable, and there are even units that you control from your phone. I'd have that system if I went away with no-one to water for me. |
