I can do a Brum, having worked there for 7 years from 65-72.

I once took a party of school kids from my Birmingham school to collect fossils (belemnites) at 'The Wren's Nest' in the Black Country, and walking ahead of us were two black country guys deep in loud conversation - utterly incomprehensible. They might as well have been talking Swahili (perhaps they were....)

Brum born and bred. Still living a stones throw from the house i grew up in !!
Its amazing the change in the accent between my house and the Black country only 7 miles away !!
Went to a pub in Tipton where the biggerst chap with tatoos all over his arms was calling the bingo numbers :o Made me laugh when he said in a high pitch voice ... onee and noin nointeen.. :07hysterical: ... (Trying to spell Nineteen in a brum accent aint easy.)

Went to the Wrens nest with school back in the early 80's collecting fossils on a geology trip !!

If you really want a laugh, try googling larn yersell geordie. I have read the book, watched the video, lived and worked for 40 years in geordiland and even married a native speaker. I still misunderstand half of what I hear.
My children and grandchildren don't seem to have a problem.
Another source of good geordie dialect is the geordie bible. Once you master the basics try listening to "the little waster" . Bobby thomson was a brilliant dialect comic.

Tony
ps I do understand most forms of lanky dialect.

Can you still go in to collect fossils? It's 40 years ago I was there J.
