Post subject:  what work are you doing on your tree?

Hello to all,
I'm just wondering what people are doing to their tree's at this time of year. I ask because on different forums, internet pages, they say different things. I know Harry Harrington (bonsai4me), wires his deciduous trees now, after leaf fall. Is it relatively safe to do most work (except repot) at this time. Would people prune their trees now & protect from frost. I ask on Wee trees because most of the members are based in the UK.

I'm not in the UK, but the weather here is quite similar to yours, maybe a bit drier in the summer and a tad colder in winter. Pruning and wiring is OK at this time of the year. I used to repot maples too, with a protection against frosts, they survived, but i do it in the spring now.

On some trees, I wait until the end of the winter to prune them when I want to try hardwood cuttings. The rate of success depends on the species and on the year, I've hade between 0% and 50% success with Japanese maples for instance, but almost 100% on Zelkova.

I am busier on my trees than than any other time of year. I'm wiring the bare branches ,i'm doing some carving later today. I like to wire this time of year as i can really see the shape of the trees .

I've wired a few trees, scots pine, needle juniper and a Chinese elm. Others will likely wait till late winter/spring. All my trees will be getting winter protection this year (previously I have got by without somehow) hence why I have wired now otherwise it would have been spring.

I always thought that you should carve in spring/summer when the healing of the outer wound would be at its quickest. Although saying that I tried to carve a larch in spring & by the end of the summer it had nearly rolled over completely. A little to quick. Does anyone have any tips regarding carving or putting a shari on a larch, or is that worth a seperate post!
Thanks for all the replies & the hardwood zelkova cuttings, :30clap2: thats a great success rate!

I'm doing a bit of carving on deadwood and giving them a lot of hard stares. I recently removed all the wire but do any new wiring on Larch before they push out new needles.

Wiring and tweaking of the little Larches, lots of twig pruning, cutting off of sacrificial branches before they get too thick and planning for pots in spring.
Also planning for a show in March, which means new and smaller pots and a vague plan of the composition.

I have done a bit of wiring on a small maple as it's still quite flexible and now is a great time to see the branch structure. I have also pruned my 2 indoor Elm's to refine the branches a bit. Lots of general cleaning and tidying dead leafs from all my pots and I have moved my outdoor elms into the polly tunnel.
