Having decided I need to go an buy something to play with, I now have a question. So supposing I come home from the local nursery with the usual reject. Totally pot bound and scraggy. Now I want to play, but should I deal with the roots and sort out the nebari, then leave it to recover, or perhaps sort out the top and get some wire on it, leaving the roots until it starts to sprout. As does it depend on the time of year, or the variety. So do I need to buy more that one plant?

if you want to work on something now, a deciduous tree i would hard prune and wire - planning to let it grow next year, maybe a little pruning if its strong, rootwork spring the following year if all is well. if you get a conifer, pruning and wiring. if you didn't go hard on it, repot sometime next year if necessary, or wait until the following year if the base doesn't need any major work and you want strong growth to set branches, grow sacrifice branches or whatever. slip potting is always an option too.
