I hopefully will have the chance on Monday to dig up one from the farm next to where my Mum lives in Derbyshire. The question is,how far should I prune it down ,or should I leave more on than i am going to use ::dunno: .I wish I had taken a photo so I could get a better idea of where to go with it.I have the go ahead to lift some Oak from the same farm so hopefully I can get permission,Just wish I had been into Bonsai 10 years ago.The farmer dug up about 600mtrs of Blackthorn chopped it up and burnt it

In my experience, Blackthorn send down quite deep tap roots. Just a suggestion but what about air layering the base instead of digging it up?

ill second that on the taproot. they spread by suckering so if its a sucker the layer would be a good idea too. anything in or near a thicket or hedgerow is likely to be a sucker.
keeping humidity high after the dig seems to be the key to getting good results.

Prunus can be propogated by chopping off a branch of around 20-24 inches long at a 45 degree angle and planting deep in a sand and grit mixture. Dust the cut with Hormone rooting compound before planting and plant it at the same angle as the cut so that the cut is parallel with the bottom of the box or pot. Apparently this method can be used on branches up to 5 inches in diameter. I tried this a few years back with some success although the trees died during the winter of 2010. I got this information from John Naka's bonsai techniques. :smallthumb: Find a nice shaped branch with some movement in it. Good luck

Thanks for that information. I have always found small blackthorn cuttings pretty easy but up to 5" sounds incredible.

Can I assume that you take these cuttings when the branch is in leaf or is it before then?

I've just checked the info in the book, it says use a cutting 15 to 20 inches long and seal the cut with tree seal. I would think the best time to try this is now or in the next few weeks as buds are swelling. You can also do this with pomegranite, willow and i think Mike Konig did one with Pyracantha a while back.

Thanks for your info.I will have to look at the tree and decide which direction to go.The Pyracantha Mike has must be about 2-3inch thick.I have a couple of cuttings which I took from a Pyracantha in Mikes garden(last year) which are about an inch thick and have all taken , maybe I will try some cuttings first.
