I was clearing the sides of a brook today and dig this Yew(i think) up. The roots are quite good, stuck it into the pot with soil from around it and got it home with half a dozen hawthorn saplings all with good roots.I have put them straight into my garden .My questions are - Should I cut any of the foliage back? and what is best to pot it up into?

If it's roots are in the original soil then leave it for a year and do nothing. That will give it a chance to decide whether it likes living with you or would prefer death to partnership!

1. Make sure it is healthy then
2 Wire for some good shape down low
3 Plant in the ground for 5 years
4 If happy with trunk girth dig up
5 wait 1 - 2 years for it to recover
6 style & wire
7 beginnings of a bonsai tree in 10 years :Big Thumb:

No kidding I need a older one :07hysterical:

As for that one it will be a life time and then some before its anything like.

But it was free and if you have the time and patience why not give it a blast :smallthumb:

I'm sorry - I wasn't trying to be curt - just realistic. You can get older garden centre yews for a tenner and save yourself many years. Yews do take an age to develop a good trunk though so with the starting point you have here a decade will be a good ball park guess unless you are going for a mame...

...or a literati (the last resort of the bonsai enthusiast who doesn't know what to do with a tree :???: ).

It shows some sign of budding back lower down the trunk, which would tempt me to chop it right back to those buds and wait for it to start again (as well as planting it in the ground etc). Whatever you do, it's a long-term project, I think.

No use in cutting it back if its going in the ground. If its gonna go in the ground then wire i pleasing shape as paul said and just put it in. Cutting back will just slow it down.

If it ain't going in the ground and you want mame then you can cut back in a year or so if you like when its recovered.

Yew aren't that slow growing when you get the roots right. They develop quickly as well.
