Post subject:  What should I do next?

Hi

I bought a deodora spruce from the local garden centre and pruned, wired and repotted it last year. I am a total novice with very little experience in bonsai but wish to learn.

My question is what should I do next?

Hello Howey.
Deodars are a type of Cedar so I wonder which you have got. At the moment, it depends on what you want from it. A shorter tree or a long trunk with most of the foliage high up. I think that the lower branches need to be bulked up in any case. What do you want from it?

I think you want more foliage on the lower branches.

So feed it and water it and wait for it to grow more.
If too much new growth is happening in the crown, trim back to buds to keep it in check.
Watch out for the wire biting in toward the end of the year and remove when necessary.

Hi thanks for the replies and yes it is a cedar, my mistake.

Unfortunately I can't see the pictures on the link you added John but thanks anyway.

As to what I want to do with it, well I really have no idea so was looking for some suggestions.

No offence but the phrase *making a silk purse out of a sow's ear* spring to mind. Just let it grow as said before, possibly even stick it in the ground or a large pot for a few years?

First I'd like to thank Stymie, Splendidplumage and John Blanchard for taking to the time and giving some helpful tips and ideas.

I do wish to say to Blanchard that I am by no means an expert at bonsai but am looking to improve my skills and realise this tree is nowhere near what it should be. I don't really see the point in your criticism as all I am doing on this forum is trying to learn. Clearly when you started out in bonsai you were already an expert with nothing to learn.

It's a shame as I really wanted to become an active member of the forum and I am sure 99% of you would be willing to help. I wo't be posting any more on here.

Thanks to those who have helped.

I hope this gets posted so it may help other beginners in the future.
