This is my oak from last year Image

I have been informed at tonights Cornwall bonsai meeting that its a cornish oak. Quite rare by all accounts. So I'm even more happy I have it. I will post a better picture soon now it's naked.

This must be Quercus petraea or Sessile oak, Cornish oak is one of its other names. Also known as Irish oak and Welsh oak. Very nice tree.

i think maybe a hybrid as imho the leaves are not right for a sessile oak.
it can be very hard to identify oaks precisely because of hybridization and local variation.
every acorn is slightly different.

i have had great sucsess with quercus hispanica which is a hybrid between turkey and cork

I was thrilled to find a few acorns beneath a Lucombe Oak in an arboretum visited a couple of weeks ago. There were very few left as I expect the wildlife had got there first but of the four I did find the largest has shown the first signs of germination. I am confident it is a q Hispanica as the one that is germinating was still in its very distinctive cup. Interested to see how this one fares and what it looks like. I gather as a cross the leaves may not be like the tree it came from.

You just reminded me I need to get to Bedgebury Arboretum where I am hoping (please please please) to find acorns from a q.microphylla. It's a naturally small leaved oak native to Mexico's highlands - and they happen to have one in Kent.

Wish I’d known that before I visited Bedgebury just before the latest lockdown.

Good luck :Big Thumb:
