WOW!! This is an old thread!!

I was given this Oak back in 2013 by a friend that was moving to a smaller property, Don (Stymie) came over to ours and took a shine to it so it went home with him!, It was quite a tall tree approaching three feet high!!

I don't know if his wife Mary still has it or if it went to his daughters home!

I went on a dig with the club at Wharncliffe side and brought a beautiful Oak home that was naturally Bonsai'd by being next to a track/road that was maintained by some kind of machine, It didn't do well and died back to the rootstock, Even the rootstock started rotting!, Eventually loads of shoots started appearing, The tree had been pushed to a corner where it only got watered as the others near it were deffo living (I thought it had died!) I didn't get a pic of the original tree unfortunately :1crybaby:

Anyhow, I removed all but two shoots and it's actually starting to to resemble a tree again (Allbeit a skinny one!)

It had been in poor compost for years, I put it in a less muddy mix this year and it put some foliage out but not much!

There wasn't a deal of roots!!

What there was had to be chopped to fit it in to the dish unless I encircled the new pot as it had itself in the last one!

The fresh leaves when they appeared were quite a nice deep shaqde of red!!

A nekked shot!!

Hopefully over the next few years and with much feeding it will thicken up some!!

Very nice Johnbaz!

Re. Lucombe Oak, there is cracking one at Bretton Park / Yorkshire Sculpture Park, at the Upper Lake bridge. I collected a few acorns this year, apparently they germinate with variable characteristics from the hybrid parents.

Have you planted them yet?

Yes, only a dozen or so but will post an update in a few years when there's something worth showing. I thought about growing from cuttings but apparently not so easy with Oak. So I guess grafting would be the only way to start true to the parent, but first I would need some Oak root stock...

i have had great sucsess with quercus hispanica which is a hybrid between turkey and cork

I was thrilled to find a few acorns beneath a Lucombe Oak in an arboretum visited a couple of weeks ago. There were very few left as I expect the wildlife had got there first but of the four I did find the largest has shown the first signs of germination. I am confident it is a q Hispanica as the one that is germinating was still in its very distinctive cup. Interested to see how this one fares and what it looks like. I gather as a cross the leaves may not be like the tree it came from.

My Lucombe Oaks germinated and are growing well. Tiny leaves compared with other germinating Quercus Robur.ImageUntitled by Sputnik184, on Flickr

Hi, I have 2 oaks. One 30 years old and the other 6 years old. They are lovely to have in my collection. Keep an eye on the fungal and spray about once every 6 weeks or when white fungal is spotted. They're not great for ramifications so keep the internodes short when pruning. One of my favourite species by far
