Hello I had my jwp a year nearly and im still baffled about how to reduce needle size. and also in my head I think candles are new growth in which my shorter needles will come from. I do not want the tree to have long branches nor do I want the tree to have big needles. I read in a book to prune the centre strongest candle and leave the weaker candles to grow on? any help will be great

I know that Pines are complicated so rather than try to cover everything here I'm going to suggest that you read up some of the advice on this link. http://www.bonsai4me.com/BonsaiSearchRe ... j2189554j5 I personally have three kinds of pine which all have to be treated differently so I know how confused one can get.

So am I right in saying new needles emerge from the old needles. Thanks

Those needles in the photo look just right for a JWP.

Japanese advice is to keep feed and water to a minimum while the candles are extending, ie, in the early part of the season. This should keep them short and compact. If fed and watered too much during this period this may cause excessive growth.
When the needles have hardened off in the late summer then the tree can be fed and watered in abundance.

There is a very good YouTube video in the 'Art of Bonsai Japan' which explains much better than this.......

Ped. I would say that if the pine in the photo is your first pine, you have been brave to star with such a good looking tree.

Pinching the centre candle / bud is called bud selection and is carried out to redistribute energy to other parts of the tree. It does not reduce the needle size. Redistributing energy can cause back budding, and the more buds which then become candles helps with needle reduction.
As Don stated pines are complicated. Training techniques are carried out at different times of the year and each technique produces a different result. The tops of pines and the ends of branches are the more vigorous parts of the tree, so you tend to reduce the number and size of the buds / candles. Read lots, as white pine in particular react slightly different that scots and black pines.
Needles fall off after 3 years, and these are helped by plucking them out. Remember the more needles and candles a branch has the more vigorous it becomes, so reduce these where you don't want too much growth, and leave where you want growth.

No buds come from between old needles, then they become candles and the needles come from the candles

This looks to be an expensive tree. I'd recommend a few 1 to 1 sessions with someone like Corin from Greenwood who can show you what to do at key times to keep this tree thriving. You can PM him on here to maybe sort something out.
