Hi all

I've had this ash for years, hacked at it every once in a while, but I just can't see a way forward for it. I've cut it back a bit, it was up at about 150 cm or so, ram rod straight...

Any thoughts?

Hi, your ash looks a lot better than mine! I post a photo only so you can feel better - really this tree needs to be hidden away (in fairness, it's kind of a rescued weed).

My plan is to let it recover this year, and then cut it down to a 4" (or so) stump next early spring. And then hope for something more interesting to emerge.

I'm not advocating this for your tree, you have more to risk. But just a thought, anyway. I'll update you on my progress next summer...

i might grow it out a bit for girth but would eventually be looking at a low chop and growing out those new shoots to 150cm again. same for yours Sven, if you chop now your trunk won't gain girth as quickly.
do you guys get much growth out of them in containers?

Thanks Bill. How much growth would you expect per year? (Just to help calibrate my patience levels...)

I'm too new to have much experience with growth rates in containers - but my pot is 35 litres, so fingers crossed for some progress.

about 30cm is the most i have seen. thats on trees 3 years after repotting. recently collected or root pruned trees will leaf out but might not extend any shoots until they get established, which can be 2 years or more. im using oversized pots too, i think thats the way to go with them if you can't put them in the ground :smallthumb:

A 4 inch seems short for an ash since the leaves are quite large, even if you end up with a tree twice that height.

Many thanks all, looks like my poor ash my limp on for a while yet.

My main problem is how to encourage more growth outwards rather than up... Any way to build branches?

On reflection, I agree, 10cm is too short. Maybe 20cm? The logic is this, I think (please correct me!):

1. At the height I chop back to, the first breaches will hopefully appear, together with my new selected leader;
2. The height of the first branch should be approx 1/3 finished tree height;
3. Pruning to 20cm height will give me an eventual finished tree height of around 60cm.

How does this sound??

Thanks!
