Post subject:  What is this?

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone knows what this is? Its got berries now but had thousands of tiny yellow bell-like flowers. Its quite bushy, extremely spiky, about 9 foot high. Any clue what it is? And if it can be used for bonsai. If not would cuttings/air layering work? Even if it cant be bonsai I want to take a small cutting of it before I move, I love it as much as the bees!

Osmanthus - I have a full sized one in my garden and have potted up a few seedlings but I don't know if they are particularly suited for bonsai or even easy to propagate from cuttings. With the amount of berries they produce you should be able to find a few seedlings.

I concur with Jtay. It is a Berberis Darwinii, and will grow quite easily from a layering. I took one last year and it rooted quickly. It is now growing on in a pot and I am hoping to make something in a few years.
As you say, though, its main problem is its thorny leaves. They are very sharp and will scratch your hands to ribbons, so gloves are a must. It also drops old, brown leaves and these stay sharp and hide in the soil, so be careful.

I know lol its gotten me quite a few times with its spikes! Thanks fir the replies, I'll look into propagation. Even if I can't use it as bonsai material I'd like to take some with me. For the bees if nothing else!

Look at the base to see if it's suitable. If you're lucky you won't have hundreds of smaller, suckering stems which berberis tend to throw out. Post a pic if you can.

Thank you for the respones!

I'm not sure what you mean about suckers and suitability? I know what they are, just wondered how they affected cuttings/layering/seeds?

When growing bonsai, it is usual and preferable to have a single trunk to make a tree-like appearance. When a plant's natural habit is to send up multiple stems, it is useful to concentrate it's vigour into one and remove the others. I did this with a Berberis stenophilla (a related plant) and have finished up with a fair trunk but it has taken a long time.

This has since evolved into a sloping wind-swept style.

Well i checked round the bush/tree today. Theres one little one growing underneath. I don't think its from one of the millions of seeds. I think its from when i was clipping and its rooted itself lol
