Hi all!

I think I read in here the other day a post that said you shouldn't mess with pine roots as they don't like it? I understand that mycelium (have I spelt that right?!) needs to be present in or around pine roots for them to grow and be healthy however, my question is how do you reduce a pine rootball if you aren't supposed to mess with their roots? If folks have been growing pines in the ground to speed up the "fattening up" process, how do you get them out of the ground, reduce their rootballs, get plenty of mycelium around the roots and repot them, if you shouldn't mess with their roots?!

I am sure I am being a bit dense ...?!

I think you're referring to mycorrhizal fungi which is beneficial to root systems. What I think I've learnt so far is you shouldn't bare root pines and other conifers and keep root disturbance to no more than one third. Others will correct me if this is wrong.

Pines don't mind root work aslong as you take no more than 30% away. I've taken a lot more off in the past and they have still thrived but 30% is a good figure to give you a better chance.

Pine strength comes from the roots so minimising disturbance of them is to be encouraged. However, it is a bonsai and eventually the roots will fill the pot so the general guideline of taking off a maximum of about a third is a good rule of thumb to follow til you get to know your tree. Mycelium boosts the trees ability to take up water and nutrients so keeping some in the existing soil mass helps it to recover faster.
