| Post subject: | Carmona repotting fail |
Hi All, I've had my Carmona for around 4 years (it was mature), and after 1 year I moved it to a bigger pot. This first repotting went fine. It lost a few leaves at first , as expected, but it soon perked up and was fine. After 2 years in this pot, I repotted it again - because my book said every couple of years to sort out roots etc... This time my Carmona has all but died I used exactly the same soil, exactly the same method as the first time... I have no idea what upset it so much, but now I am really struggling to bring it back to life. It has lost ALL leaves. At first I thought it was just losing a few as before, but eventually all just dried up, shrivelled, and fell off. There is still life in it - branches are very bendy and there is green under the bark, but I have no idea what to do now. I tried putting it outside to get more light and general goodness from other plants etc... but it didn't respond at all. Now I've got it back in it's usual window sill, with a light (white) bin bag over it and it's tray to try and give it some major humidity... I don't see what a tree with no leaves can do with extra sun light - so what else should I be doing??? Getting kinda desperate, and generally don't have much hope left ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! |

Don't lose heart yet buddy. Summer is starting today and that is the biggest tonic of all. Keep the medium just moist but don't be tempted to feed it until it is well and truly sprouting again. You speak of the same soil without being specific, what exactly is it planted in and are there adequate drain holes in the container? |

I had a fukien tea a few years back (recently bought another one too) and it did the same thing when i repotted it. My repot was to get it out of the awful soil it came in, so while I didnt prune any roots, the roots were very much disturbed. It dropped all its leaves. At the time I was overly enthusiastic and wanted to baby it, but it was a good lesson in patience. I left it pretty much alone. It was in a bright spot indoors, warm but no central heating and well watered when required. It grew back eventually. Can't remember how long it took but it did recover. Whats the medium like? Any pics of tree and medium? When repotting were there plenty of roots or were they mushy? |

Agree with Jerry. What you are doing is right, but if it fails take heart from the fact that no one can keep a fukien tea alive. |

They are very temperamental trees.Don't like being moved. They enjoy being out in Summer but when they're brought in Autumn they sulk. I have one for two years now.It was repotted earlier in the year, dropped all it's leaves and took about two months to leaf out again so don't give up hope all may be well.Keep it moist and mist spray it a few times a week.Good luck Mo |

And yet two other commonly imported trees are excellent for bonsai - Ficus and Chinese elms. |
