Hello to all I was just wondering what the average growth rate is for Japanese Larch regarding Bonsai? If peeps have a few examples of their keeps that would be great especially 1-5 years etc Cheers |

How do Chalky, welcome to weetrees. Growth rate has to be dependent on several things. Where it's planted, size of container, ground etc. Then whether it is fed and if so by how much. My daughter has Larch with the smallest needles that I have ever seen. She keeps them in small containers and never feeds them.

I'm just trying to get my head around growth rates. |

My Larches will put on around 4 feet in a season, that's when they are kept in a large planter with plenty of water and feed. However, that's purely extension growth, which is used to beef up the trunk and doesn't really have any 'value' in a finished bonsai sense. |

For bonsai in relatively restricting pots, I find growth pretty slow. It also depends on whether you pinch back the annual growth or not. As Nick says, this growth is irrelevant to the finished bonsai. |

Ah I see. I'd assume that amount of growth would be for a larger tree? Seem like a fascinating species. |
