Post subject:  Ideas for yet another little ligustrum stump please?

Looking at some of the recent posts of small trees carved from privet and other hedging stumps I am really keen to have a go. I've been saving up interesting bits of old hedging but could do with some help with ideas and techniques as well as reassurance as my carving experience is pretty limited. This looked like a small stump with some potential to start with and it's really well rooted in the pond basket. The only live section of the tree is the central trunk but I think the dead wood on the outer trunks is sound enough to take carving. Where would you go from here?

Heyup Sputters, don't be in too much of a hurry.
Keep tipping the new growths back to leave three leaves this will help it to bush out. The dead parts aren't going anywhere and you can leave them be until you're sure they're dead and consider the carving during the Winter when growth has slowed almost to a standstill.
It'll be fine in the basket and I think it's going to be very good. :smallthumb:

Feed it well at this time of the year to encourage back budding. My personal choice is Naruko.

The first thing i do with something like this is to sort out the cut bits. find out where the live bits are and then just carve away the edge so the contour is the same as the shape of the trunk .

Why is there only two trunks in this pic. Is it behind so i can't see it.

Yes it's behind. A week ago all the branches with foliage on were about 3 foot long. I'm almost positive the two outer trunks are dead.

I know people say not to look at other bonsai when styling your own, but i always do and i look at trees in nature too. with something like this, its not something you'd always stumble across in nature, so sometimes you can find inspiration from what others have done with similar material and take something from it. what Harry harrington does with Privets is quite unique...

You could attempt to make those,( i counted five branches on the middle trunk) train them up as little trees, similar to image above and then carve the dead trunks on either side

It was seeing what others have done with the humble privet that pushed me to have a go. I've admired Harry's privets for ages but just didn't have the material or the confidence to go for it. Then seeing Fangorns progression recently I dug out the little stump and started to look at it again. Your little oak style stump was pretty impressive too Bobby. Wish I had your confidence.

if you have just cut back i would let it grow now. you will get lots of back budding hopefully. it does look like the 2 outer bits are dead to me. interesting material though.
fyi the first tree of Harry Harringtons posted by Bobby is a hawthorn
