Heyup Sputters, don't be in too much of a hurry. Keep tipping the new growths back to leave three leaves this will help it to bush out. The dead parts aren't going anywhere and you can leave them be until you're sure they're dead and consider the carving during the Winter when growth has slowed almost to a standstill. It'll be fine in the basket and I think it's going to be very good. |

Feed it well at this time of the year to encourage back budding. My personal choice is Naruko. |

Yes it's behind. A week ago all the branches with foliage on were about 3 foot long. I'm almost positive the two outer trunks are dead. |

I know people say not to look at other bonsai when styling your own, but i always do and i look at trees in nature too. with something like this, its not something you'd always stumble across in nature, so sometimes you can find inspiration from what others have done with similar material and take something from it. what Harry harrington does with Privets is quite unique... ![]() You could attempt to make those,( i counted five branches on the middle trunk) train them up as little trees, similar to image above and then carve the dead trunks on either side ![]()

I've admired Harry's privets for ages but just didn't have the material or the confidence to go for it. Then seeing Fangorns progression recently I dug out the little stump and started to look at it again. Your little oak style stump was pretty impressive too Bobby. Wish I had your confidence. |
