It's painful to watch, Tinbum. Two humans doing their utmost to murder a garden conifer. :061haha: I fear in the hands of total amateurs (and quite a few experienced ones) this tree shows little or no promise of ever being a bonsai. Although the translation (very broadly) is 'tree in a tray', there are certain other criteria that need to be addressed.
Start by reading as much about creating bonsai (bonsai4me.com - Bonsai Basics Section is a useful site) and look at lots of pictures of good bonsai. The internet is full of them. Have a look at Graham Potter's YouTube demo's too.
Rather than struggle with something which is totally unsuitable to start with, have a mooch around your local nursery or garden centre and find a small shrub or conifer (preferably one that has one single 'trunk') to which you can apply the first of the techniques towards creating your own bonsai.
Bonsai is not a hobby for instant gratification. You need to learn how to grow, create and care for them and have lots of patience to wait for your subject to grow and develop. Butcher a piece of material and it will surely repay you with a sudden death.
One thing often said in bonsai is 'only one trauma during one growing season', which means don't try to do everything at once i.e., dig up, reduce roots and major pruning in a day.
I hope this doesn't put you off bonsai for life but if you have a serious interest, you need to follow some rules which will enable you to have a collection of small, healthy trees that you have created yourself.
