Hi all,

New here, so be gentle! I've recently picked up an interest in bonsai and have purchased a few, gone to a couple of workshop days at Herons Bonsai and read various books.

I got a couple of grade nursery trees with the idea to train them. I have styled this Squamata Juniper in a couple attempts but know it's not I the right path - the middle trunk section is quite straight. Anyone any suggestions to better train this tree? Thinking it needs more shape but it's quite a solid trunk and not sure if able to reshape? Any thoughts welcome. Think it might bemore suited to literati style now it's been thinned out so much.

Thanks Rich

Hi and welcome

I think that we would need to see a photo of this tree in order to advise you

On the 5th July there is a bonsai show and all day workshop at Roots garden centre just down the road from Dai-ichi bonsai, Hermitage near Newbury. SO you could bring your tree down, as well as seeing the displays there will be a number of traders there.

If you need anymore details just PM me

hi Rich. juniper are species where you can can bend thick wood successfully, but doing this becomes a question of how to get the right leverage and how to then hold that in place. traditional wiring will not be strong enough.
tbh it would not be my approach with this material, i would let it grow for now but would aim to lean the planting angle to the right and build the branch structure from the first 2 branches, keeping the other branches for now as sacrifice growth.

The good news with Squamate is that you can prune harder than normal scale junipers and not risk juvenile foliage, as the foliage is already spiky

Thanks Bill and Deano for your thoughts. I was kind of thinking the same thing; about leaving it to grow and recover before tackling more styling - maybe changing the positioning is something to look at, now foliage is sparse. Suppose I'm just too eager at getting it to a kind of final plan, but guess that's a common rookie error, in trying to do too much too soon. I do feel there's still some potential in there!

Thanks.
